Welcome, any and all new people! My name is Daniel Blees, and if you were linked to this blog from the Geek Partnership Society and their auction, thank you for considering my artwork! Normally, I post here three times a week, but I’m going to forgo my usual posts, so this post remains at the top.
Any Color is the product of all my ideas, and my excess of Magic cards. I wanted to create a piece of art that showcased the various amazing arts that I love on Magic cards, but in a way that turned them all into one big story, much like the cards themselves come together to tell a story, or a pile of curated cards creates a deck. The image of Manamorphose was chosen because it is simple enough that non-Magic players can recognize the basic shape (a hand holding…something), but a good enough card to play that Magic players will recognize it as well.
The entire process of creation took several months. Digital planning, acquiring the cards, cutting out 1,560 individual arts, gluing them down on board, and bracing the back for hanging. I’m very happy with the result, and I hope everyone finds a new detail that they can appreciate.
For other blog content of mine, perhaps you can look at some of my Magic-themed articles, where I take a look at the artistic merit of individual cards and the stories they tell. Artists in Cardstock in particular takes a look at some of my favorite artists, and why their art is iconic.
I’m hoping to get a portfolio of some kind posted today or tomorrow (Thursday). Until then, my Instagram is @bleesotron. Have fun at the convention!
